INEOS ENTERPRISES SETS SCIENCE CHALLENGE FOR LOCAL SCHOOL CHILDREN

Budding scientists from St Bede's Primary School in Weaverham have risen to the challenge by making their very own salt! The students were set the challenge by INEOS Enterprises' Salt Business at Runcorn as part of the University of York's Children Challenging Industry (CCI) initiative, which helps youngsters to understand the importance of science and industry.

The enthusiastic young scientists worked alongside CCI Advisory Teacher, Sue Andrews, to find the best way to make salt using a number of classroom experiments. They also discovered how much we rely on salt in everyday life, not just for flavouring our food but also for important uses such as food preservatives, de-icing for roads and motorways, water softening and animal feeds to name but a few.

Once the children had compiled their findings they were invited to the INEOS Enterprises Salt Plant at Runcorn to see how salt is made on an industrial scale. The 27 children were treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour and took part in workshops to compare the salt they had made in the classroom with the different grades of salt made at the factory. After seeing the Company's speedy packing process the morning culminated in a final challenge - a competition to see which group could bag 'St Bede's Best Salt' in the fastest time - the Orange team were the proud winners with a time of just 5 minutes 5 seconds!

Ian Bradley, Technical and Engineering Manager for INEOS Enterprises' Salt Business said: "Supporting our local schools is something that is very important for us and the Children Challenging Industry Scheme is fantastic. The children showed a genuine interest and a real understanding of the science behind salt - their enthusiasm was a breath of fresh air. All the team in the Salt Business enjoyed the experience and we hope to work with another school soon."

Sue Andrews, CCI Advisory Teacher said: "The great thing about this initiative is that the children find the science experiments and site visit so much fun that they don't realise how much they are actually learning. I am delighted that INEOS Enterprises provided such a fascinating visit, allowing an insight into industry and inspiring the young scientists of the future."
